Women’s Dermatology
At Vanguard Skin Specialists, we understand that women do not always have the same skin concerns as men. There are certain dermatologic conditions that are specific to women, while others may present differently in women.
Acne in Women
Acne is a common condition affecting all ages and genders. Adult women, however, tend to have more persistent acne than men. It is also affected by the menstrual cycle, which can cause flare-ups.
We use topical and oral medications to control acne, and most cases can be managed successfully.
Pigmentation Problems
Melasma, age spots, and post-inflammatory pigmentation occur more in women than men. These conditions can be caused by sun exposure and estrogen. There are treatments to help with the appearance of hyperpigmentation including prescription medication and in-office cosmetic treatment.
Melasma appears as brown patches, usually on the face, including the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, upper lip, and chin. For many women, melasma occurs during pregnancy, earning it the nickname “mask of pregnancy.“
Age spots, also called liver spots, are brown spots that appear on the hands, face, arms, shoulders, chest, and back – areas that receive the most sun exposure over the years. They most often occur in adults over the age of 50.
Post-inflammatory pigmentation occurs as a result of an injury, such as a burn, or an inflammatory disorder of the skin such as dermatitis or an infection. It is most common in darker skin types.
Vulva and Vaginal Conditions
We want all patients to feel comfortable discussing skin conditions, wherever they may occur. Vulvar and vaginal rashes can be caused by a variety of conditions such as bacterial or yeast infections, lichen sclerosis, hidradenitis suppurativa, contact dermatitis, or other conditions. We have also diagnosed and treated skin cancer in the genital area. As part of a total body skin exam, we will offer to examine the genitals if you desire.
Oftentimes, our dermatology providers can make a diagnosis simply by examining the skin, while other times they may need to do a biopsy. There are options to make most symptoms improve dramatically.
We welcome the opportunity to help women with sensitive conditions and to help you feel at ease during your visit.
