PERSONAL HISTORY

Dr. Renata Prado was born in the mountains of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She grew up with a large Italian descendent family among many cousins, uncles, and aunts. Both of her parents are chemical engineers and her brother is also a physician; they all still live in her hometown in Brazil, with everyone else in her family.

During her childhood and youth, Dr. Prado played tennis, danced ballet, and enjoyed traveling with her family. She spent part of her childhood in Germany and completed her high school senior year as an exchange student in Virginia.

In 1994, Dr. Prado was admitted into UFMG School of Medicine, a leading Latin American university. During her medical studies, she participated extensively in several research projects and was awarded a three-year federal grant to research the determinants of maternal-fetal transmission of HIV. Dr. Prado presented her research at several national conferences, and her love for academic research grew stronger.

During her last year of medical school, Dr. Prado was selected for a dermatology international rotation at Marselisborg Hospital in Denmark to work with patients with severe dermatologic conditions requiring hospitalization. This was a professionally and culturally rich experience that sparked her interest in how medicine is practiced in other countries. She returned to Brazil for her last year of medical school, and at her graduation, she was elected by her classmates to read the Hippocratic Oath during the commencement ceremony, a great honor for students graduating at UFMG School of Medicine, and an unforgettable moment for her.

During her internship, Dr. Prado spent 3 months working in an underserved rural area in Brazil, an experience that had a profound impact on her life.

Dr. Prado completed an internal medicine residency in one of the largest hospitals in her state, where she proceeded to work as a hospitalist and in the ICU. In 2002, she was married and moved to the US to pursue dermatologic academic research.

Dr. Prado was a post-doctoral research fellow both at Northwestern University in Chicago and at the University of Colorado in Denver, where she performed cutting-edge research on skin immunology. After completing her dermatology residency and Mohs surgery fellowship at the University of Colorado, Dr. Prado moved to Massachusetts, where she worked for four years in a private practice.

In 2016, Dr. Prado and her family decided to return to the beautiful mountains of Colorado, and she joined Vanguard Skin Specialists. She immediately related to Vanguard’s operating principles and shared their vision to make a positive impact on patients, the community, and the world at large.

Dr. Prado has two boys and spends most of her free time with them. She feels blessed to live in Colorado Springs and to be part of this community. You can see her biking with her boys almost every end of the day in her neighborhood during the summer months. She and her family go every year to Brazil, to spend time with family and friends. This year, Dr. Prado returned to practice classical ballet.
