PERSONAL HISTORY

Emily grew up in rural Maine on a dairy farm. She and her sister helped her parents raise cows, make hay, and participate in the upkeep of the farm. When Emily was a junior in high school, her father returned to school full-time to pursue a career as a physician assistant. During this time, she shared the responsibility for keeping up the farm with her sister and her mother.

Not only did Emily help manage the farm, she also maintained a successful high school sporting career in field hockey, basketball, and track, and she graduated as salutatorian of her high school class. Emily looks back on farm life fondly, and realizes how juggling the farm with her school life contributed to her future ambitions. She continues to be very proud of her father for making a career change in his 40s, despite the 4 a.m. milkings before school.

During college at Furman University, Emily studied abroad in Bonn, Germany and Grahamstown, South Africa. After graduation, she spent four years working for a Boston-based international public health company. During this time she lived in Afghanistan for a year and made several trips to Southern Africa. While she was in Afghanistan, Emily discovered her calling to become a nurse. She completed her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts in 2010.

During Emily’s studies to become a nurse practitioner, she also worked as a nurse on a surgical oncology floor at a community hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After finishing her master’s degree, Emily practiced family medicine for four years. She also spent time teaching clinical courses to nurse practitioner students at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professionals.

While working in family practice, Emily discovered an interest in dermatology. She was fortunate to be accepted into a rigorous two-year dermatology fellowship for nurse practitioners at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, which she completed in 2016.

Emily has presented a dermatology topic at the Maui Derm NP/PA Conference and is a member of the Dermatology Nurses Association and the American Academy for Nurse Practitioners Dermatology Specialty Group.

In her spare time, Emily enjoys cycling, and met her husband, Keith, at a cyclocross race in the Boston area in 2010. Keith introduced Emily to racing her bike and she excelled in the cyclocross genre. Emily advanced to UCI-level cyclocross races and would also jump into a few Cat 1 or pro-level mountain bike races in the New England area. The highlight of her bike racing career was a podium finish at Cyclocross Nationals in 2015.

Emily has, for the most part, hung up the race bike, and now she and Keith spend their free time riding bikes of all kinds for fun. They moved to Colorado Springs in October 2016 and enjoy all of the outdoor opportunities that Colorado has to offer. Emily plans to become more involved in the cycling community. She also enjoys practicing yoga, gardening, and spending time with her husband and son.

When she lived in the Boston area, Emily led a team of women with the purpose of getting other women on bikes and helping them to feel comfortable and empowered by the bike. She hopes to be able to put those skills to work in the Colorado Springs area as well.
