Overcoming The Challenges of COVID-19 Together

The 2020 shutdown of most medical services brought a significant set of challenges to Vanguard. We had to stop providing most medical services including treatment of most types of skin cancer. As Leisle, CEO of Vanguard explained, “It was as if we had been dropped into a lake and then were told to swim to shore. We had no idea when we could take care of patients again.”

Vanguard made a decision to make it through the shutdown together, without mandatory furloughs or lay offs. Doctors and leadership gave up salaries with the goal of preserving as many jobs as possible. It was through the determination of our team to make it through together that we were able to keep our spirits high and our doors open with virtual visits and volunteering in the community. As Vanguard’s practice manager, Ashton describes, “Most of our team actually volunteered to make sacrifices so that we would all make it to shore together.”

Vanguard’s mission is to make a positive impact on our patients, our community, and our world. Vanguard learned many lessons from the pandemic, but the greatest lesson of all is the truth in the African proverb – When you want to go fast, go alone. But when you want to go far, go together.
