For people who have persistent acne, it is a struggle to find the right skincare regimen.
There are varying degrees of severity of a person’s acne, from an occasional pimple to cystic acne with large pimples. These can be painful, embarrassing, and cause scarring.

Benzoyl Peroxide
A 5-10% benzoyl peroxide wash is an over-the-counter product that is most commonly recommended by Vanguard’s dermatologists. Benzoyl peroxide is commonly found in acne products from cleansers to creams, because it can help reduce acne-causing bacteria. Thus, a benzoyl peroxide wash is a common recommendation for any acne regimen.
Benzoyl peroxide can be drying, however, so it does require a moisturizer to rehydrate the skin.
Moisturizer
Many patients with acne do not want to use a moisturizer, for fear it will exacerbate acne. However, it’s important to hydrate the skin, especially since many acne treatments can cause dryness. A non-comedogenic, oil-free moisturizer is important, even for patients with acne.
Clara HydraGel is an excellent option for patients who would prefer not to use a lotion. This hyaluronic gel absorbs quickly into the skin, providing moisture but without any weight or residue. It is a favorite for acne patients.
Sunscreen
It is important for acne patients to wear sunscreen daily, since acne can make one prone to hyperpigmentation. A light-weight, oil-free sunscreen can provide the necessary protection without exacerbating acne. EltaMD UV Clear and VanguardMD Sheer are the two sunscreens most recommended to acne patients.
Prescription Treatments
For patients who require more than over-the-counter treatments, Vanguard’s dermatologists and advanced practice providers will prescribe medications – typically beginning with topical medications. For those who require more aggressive treatments, oral prescription medications may be necessary. The good news is that it is possible to manage acne and to see significant improvement with the right treatment.

Once acne has been managed successfully, patients may still have remnants of acne due to dyspigmentation (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) – also called simply marks – from old acne scars.
