On a daily basis, most of us experience sunlight for short durations. Wearing sunscreen, limiting direct UV exposure, and shielding our bodies with sunglasses, hats, and standard clothing is typically all the sun protection we need. However, for people who spend the majority of their days outside, or for people who enjoy outdoor weekend activities and vacations to sun-soaked beaches, it can be extremely helpful to have another line of defense that not only safeguards the skin from dangerous cancers but also looks and feels great.
SPF vs UPF: What’s the Difference for Sun Protection?
We are all familiar with SPF, the sun protection factor applied to sunscreens. Through shopclara.com we offer a variety of sunscreens with SPF ratings of 30 or higher to keep the skin protected against UVA, UVB, and the cellular damage these forms of radiation can create within the skin.
UPF, on the other hand, is a term many people aren’t familiar with. UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor and is the rating system for fabrics. UPF ratings range between single-digit numbers (a plain white t-shirt has an average UPF rating of 5) and 50+. These numbers, when divided into 100, denote the amount of UV radiation that penetrates the fabric to reach the skin beneath. For example, a UPF 5 rating means that as much as 20% of UV rays reach the skin, while a UPF of 50 reduces that number to only 2%.
The Importance of High UPF Clothing
Dr. Renata Prado, board-certified dermatologist, and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon with Vanguard Skin Specialists is a big fan of high UPF-rated clothing and wears it herself while enjoying outdoor activities with her family.
“In addition to seeking shade and applying sunscreen,” writes Dr. Prado, “wearing ultraviolet protective clothing is an important part of skin protection against ultraviolet rays. In fact, it’s important to cover up as much of your skin as possible when spending time outdoors, and sunscreen should only be used in areas that cannot be otherwise covered.
“Fabrics that have a tight weave and dark colors offer more protection. For more effective sun protection, select clothing with a UPF number on the label. Don’t forget to also protect your feet and hands. Closed shoes are best, but if you wear sandals, don’t forget to apply sunscreen on your feet.”
Dr. Prado goes on to share some of her favorite options for hand protection. “I personally like UV protection gloves for the hands since, as a surgeon, I wash my hands numerous times a day. I use UV protection gloves when I am hiking or biking, but even for everyday activities such as driving.”
