Ask any of the patients of Vanguard Skin Specialists why they really keep coming back, and they’ll tell you it’s because of the care and attention to detail that they receive at every visit with Dr. Banich and his colleagues. Dr. James (Jim) Banich is a general plastic surgeon, with the ability to reconstruct a patient’s body from head to toe.
But just because he can perform surgery on a patient doesn’t mean that that’s always the course he recommends. Dr. Banich sees his primary is to serve as a healer. His specialized attention, keen and creative eye for surgically restoring form and function and caring character make him an indispensable part of the Vanguard Skin Specialists team.
Dr. Banich provides a vital function at Vanguard Skin Specialists. While most of our dermatologists focus on the skin and cosmetic procedures around the face, Dr. Banich has the unique ability to provide extensive, full-body cosmetic and reconstructive care – allowing the practice to be a full-service clinic.
Below are some of the highlights of Dr. Banich’s medical specialty and background.
What Brought Dr. Banich to Plastic Surgery?
Most people don’t realize how broad the field of plastic surgery really is. At Vanguard Skin Specialists, Dr.Banich treats everything from burns and facial trauma to tummy tucks (abdominoplasties), nose jobs(rhinoplasties) and delicate eyelid surgeries(blepharoplasties).
Dr. Banich loves the flexibility and art of plastic surgery. Commenting on his joy of reconstruction after skin cancer surgery, he states “I can get really creative with it. Every situation is like a puzzle, and I love the challenge of coming up with a game plan for each unique patient. In plastic surgery, often there is no right answer – there are many ways to address a problem.
“The great thing about what I do is I try to tailor my care based on what the patient wants and needs. The merging of medical necessity and artistry is a challenge that I enjoy.”
What Services Does Dr. Banich Specialize In?
Dr. Banich is a general plastic surgeon, providing reconstruction from head to toe – helping to restore both form and function. He performs reconstruction after skin cancer excision three days a week with colleague Dr. Vinh Chung.
He is also quite popular for his work with procedures such as breast surgery, including cancer reconstruction as well as breast augmentation and breast reduction surgeries; cosmetic and functional eyelid surgery; cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty, and mommy makeovers (ie. combining breast work with abdominoplasty or liposuction). As you can see, Dr. Banich greatest satisfaction is helping patients to feel whole and well- regardless if the case is cosmetic or reconstructive. His goal is to create beauty for his patients by restoring form and function through the art of plastic surgery.
What Dr. Banich Wants His Patients to Know
Dr. Banich seeks first to “Do No Harm.”
When he meets with a patient for a procedure consultation, he explains the risks and the benefits. He said, “I try hard to make patients feel at ease when I first meet them. At their initial consultation, we discuss risks in detail. I want them to be very well informed. When they return and choose to move forward, we shift our focus to maximizing positive outcomes. What can I do to assure I get the result the patient desires?
“If I can’t understand what the patient desires and the patient can’t express understanding of the limits of what I do for them, I won’t operate. I’m a doctor first, and I have nothing but primary focus for their health and well-being. If I’m not confident I can match expectations, surgery may not be the best option.”
Dr. Banich wants his current and potential patients to know that his overall goal is to treat them in a way that will create the most benefit. This doesn’t always lead to surgery. It may lead to weight loss or diet change or vitamin and mineral supplements.
“When you come see me, I’m not going to just see a problem, I’m going to see a person. My goal is to use the tools and training I have to help my patients look, feel, and live better,” said Dr. Banich.
