Eczema and Dermatitis

Understanding Eczema

Eczema and dermatitis can create persistent discomfort, including itching, redness, scaling, and irritation that can affect sleep, confidence, and quality of life.

At Vanguard Skin Specialists, our experienced dermatology providers bring extensive experience diagnosing and treating the full spectrum of inflammatory skin conditions. We listen to concerns, examine the skin, and tailor a personalized treatment plan to calm the flare, restore skin health, and prevent recurrence. With our patient-centered approach and advanced dermatologic therapies, you’ll get both relief and long-term skincare strategies.

Common Forms of Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis

A common chronic condition characterized by dry, red, itchy patches of skin, often beginning in childhood. Infants typically develop atopic dermatitis on the scalp, cheeks, and elbows, while in children it appears on the face, the creases of the elbows, behind the knees, and on wrists, hands, and feet.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Eczema triggered by contact with chemicals that cause allergic reactions (e.g., fragrances, preservatives, and metals). We offer testing for allergic contact dermatitis.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis

“Chemical burns” from repeated exposure to harsh substances such as soaps, solvents, or frequent hand washing.

Seborrheic Dermatitis, Nummular Eczema, Dyshidrotic Eczema, and Others

These forms of eczema may mimic other types of rashes and require evaluation and specialized treatment.

Treatment and Relief for Eczema

At Vanguard Skin Specialists, we apply a comprehensive approach to treating eczema and dermatitis. Your provider will assess your skin, identify contributing factors, and develop a plan. Your treatment may include topical therapies, systemic medications for moderate-to-severe disease, and educational support to avoid triggers and manage flare-ups.

We recommend daily skincare routines that help repair the skin barrier and reduce inflammation. This includes fragrance-free non-soap cleansers, moisturizing creams applied immediately after showering, protective habits during cold, dry conditions, and lifestyle adjustments to avoid contact with irritants or allergens.
