Understanding Skin Allergies

Skin allergies, otherwise known as Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD), can cause persistent rashes, redness, and itching that disrupt daily life and comfort.

At Vanguard Skin Specialists, our expert dermatology providers take a thorough, evidence-based approach to determine the underlying cause of allergic skin reactions. A detailed medical evaluation and personalized treatment plan are often paired with patch testing to determine if a specific allergen or irritant chemical may be causing your rashes.

Once the trigger is identified, further recommendations are made to calm inflammation, repair the skin barrier, and prevent future flare-ups. Our goal is to provide lasting relief, clear skin, and the peace of mind that comes from understanding your condition and how to manage it effectively.

Types of Skin Reactions

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Allergic contact dermatitis is a form of skin allergy caused by an immune-mediated allergic reaction to a chemical that touches the skin. It can occur in both children and adults and is more common in someone who has a history of eczema. Allergic contact dermatitis is usually chronic; once you’ve had a reaction to an allergen, repeated exposure will cause symptoms to recur, sometimes even more severely than previous exposures.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD)

A skin reaction caused by direct damage from repeated exposure to harsh substances such as soaps, detergents, or solvents. While not an allergic response, ongoing irritation can cause a broken skin barrier and make it more sensitive to future allergens.

Occupational or Hobby-Related Skin Allergies

Allergic reactions caused by substances encountered in specific jobs or hobbies. Common examples include hair stylists reacting to dyes, metal workers exposed to nickel, cleaners affected by detergents, or gardeners reacting to plants or pesticides. Identifying and avoiding the triggering exposure is essential for long-term control.

Patch Testing

A person’s back with several transparent adhesive patches arranged in rows, each containing white dots—commonly used to test for skin allergies or allergy symptoms. The person has light skin and blond hair.

More About Patch Testing

When the cause of a skin reaction isn’t obvious, patch testing can provide the answers. This specialized diagnostic test helps identify which chemicals are triggering an allergic response on your skin. Patch testing is a painless, needle-free process that takes place over two visits, four days apart.

Treatment Options for Skin Allergies

If a trigger is identified, we guide you in eliminating or minimizing exposure and develop a personalized plan. As an American Contact Dermatitis Society member, we provide you with a detailed safe product list, highlighting personal care products that do not contain your allergens. Depending on the severity of your condition, your dermatology provider may prescribe topical medications to calm inflammation and help repair your broken skin barrier. In severe cases, oral medications are prescribed for widespread dermatitis.
