Pediatric Skin Conditions

Expert Skin Care for Your Child

Children’s skin is uniquely sensitive, and pediatric skin conditions range from mild rashes and birthmarks to more complex dermatologic disorders.

At Vanguard Skin Specialists, our experienced dermatology providers care for children of all ages—from infants and toddlers through teens—with gentle, evidence-based, family-friendly care. We take the time to accurately diagnose your child’s concern, explain what’s happening, and build a treatment plan that is tailored to their age, skin type, lifestyle, and developmental needs.

Common Childhood Skin Conditions

Children experience a wide range of skin conditions as they grow. From newborn rashes to teenage acne, each condition has its own causes, appearance, and treatment approach. Some of the most common skin conditions we see in children include:

Gentle Treatment for Pediatric Skin Conditions

At Vanguard Skin Specialists, we apply a child-centered and medically rigorous approach to treating pediatric skin concerns. After careful evaluation of your child’s skin, medical history, growth, and development, we will select therapies suited for younger skin—from gentle topical medications to prescription treatments when needed. We strive to minimize discomfort, avoid overtreatment, and choose safe product formulations suitable for children.

Alongside in-office care, we emphasize home-based strategies such as using fragrance-free moisturizers, gentle detergents, adequate sun protection, and committing to lifestyle or environmental modifications when needed (such as avoiding irritants, setting good bath/shower routines, and managing triggers). Our goal is to treat the condition, support healthy skin habits for life, and ensure parents and children feel empowered and informed.

Sun Protection for Kids

Children’s skin is just as vulnerable to sun damage as adult skin—and in Colorado’s high-elevation environment, UV exposure is even stronger. Establishing good sun-protection habits early helps safeguard their skin now and builds a foundation for lifelong skin health. When selecting sun protection for your child, keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Choose a broad-spectrum, zinc-based (or mineral) sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
  • For children over 6 months old, apply sunscreen daily to all exposed areas of skin. Harmful UV rays can penetrate windows, so sunscreen use is helpful even when indoors or in the car.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, or more often if swimming or sweating.
  • Wear sun protective clothing such as fabrics with a high UPF rating (generally tightly woven fabrics in dark or bright colors), wide-brim hats, and sunglasses.
  • Seek shade when outdoors, and don’t forget to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Safe Skin Products for Kids

At Vanguard Skin Specialists, our dermatology providers help parents navigate the often-confusing world of pediatric skincare. We can recommend products that are both effective and safe for your child’s age, skin type, and specific condition—helping you build a simple, protective daily routine. When choosing skincare for your child, consider the following:

  • Look for gentle, fragrance-free, and dye-free formulas. Products labeled “for sensitive skin” or “hypoallergenic” are less likely to cause irritation.
  • Choose thick, cream- or ointment-based moisturizers instead of lotions, which may contain more water and preservatives.
  • Avoid adult acne or anti-aging products, as these can be too harsh for children’s delicate skin.
  • Stick to trusted brands often recommended by dermatologists, such as CeraVe, Cetaphil, Eucerin, and Vanicream.
  • Test new products on a small patch of skin first, especially for children with eczema or known sensitivities.
  • When in doubt, consult your child’s dermatology provider or pediatrician.
